Online, Showroom or Home Visit? The Best Way to Buy Blinds

Buying Blinds in 2026: Online, Showroom or Home Visit — Which Is Right for You?

Quick Answer

The best way to buy blinds depends on your priorities.

  • Buying online is usually the cheapest option but leaves you responsible for measuring, ordering and fitting.
  • Visiting a showroom allows you to see products operating and compare fabrics before you buy.
  • A home visit provides the most personalised advice, accurate measurements and the opportunity to identify problems before ordering.

For straightforward windows and confident DIY homeowners, online purchasing can work well. For larger projects, unusual windows, or customers wanting expert advice, a home consultation often reduces the risk of costly mistakes and helps ensure the most suitable blind is chosen.

Last week I visited two homeowners who had already bought their blinds online.

Both thought they were making the smart choice.

One had measured incorrectly, and the blinds simply didn't fit.

The other had ordered a roller blind for a back door. It looked perfect on the website. Once installed, however, it stopped the door from opening fully.

Neither homeowner was particularly angry.

Mostly, they were frustrated.

After spending time measuring, ordering, waiting for delivery, and attempting installation, both ended up saying almost exactly the same thing:

"It hasn't actually saved us anything."

That conversation stuck with me.

Because when people buy blinds, they're often focused on the upfront cost. What they don't always consider is the cost of getting it wrong.

And in 2026, there are now more ways than ever to buy blinds.

A quick online search brings up hundreds of companies offering made-to-measure blinds delivered straight to your door. Most towns still have showrooms where you can see products in person. And many local companies now offer home consultations where everything is measured, quoted and installed for you.

So which option is best?

The honest answer is that there isn't one right answer.

It depends on what's most important to you: price, convenience, confidence, or expert advice.

Is Buying Blinds Online the Cheapest Option?

There's no question that online retailers have changed the industry.

Prices can be attractive. Ordering is easy. Many websites now offer measuring guides, installation videos and extensive product ranges.

For straightforward windows and confident DIY homeowners, online purchasing can work extremely well.

Advantages

  • Often the lowest initial cost
  • Convenient ordering from home
  • Huge product selection
  • No appointments required

Disadvantages

  • You are responsible for measuring
  • You are responsible for fitting
  • No expert advice before ordering
  • Colours and fabrics can look very different in real life
  • Mistakes can become expensive very quickly

One thing we've learned over the years is that most blind problems aren't caused by poor products.

They're caused by small details people simply didn't know to look for.

Window handles.

Door clearances.

Recess depth.

Projection.

Things that seem insignificant until the blind arrives.

Then suddenly they matter a lot.

What Are the Advantages of Visiting a Blind Showroom?

For decades, visiting a showroom was the traditional way to buy blinds.

And there are still some excellent reasons to do it.

You can operate the products yourself.

You can compare systems side by side.

You can physically handle fabrics rather than relying on photographs.

You also get to meet the people behind the company.

Are they knowledgeable?

Do they listen?

Do they ask good questions?

Those things matter.

Advantages

  • See products operating before buying
  • Compare different systems side by side
  • Handle fabrics and materials
  • Meet the company behind the products

Disadvantages

  • Colours can appear different under showroom lighting
  • You're not seeing fabrics in your own room
  • Most installations still require a home survey afterwards
  • Requires travelling to the showroom

When I started in the blinds industry over 35 years ago, this was the route we encouraged most customers to take.

Back then, we carried a single pattern book for each blind type and customers often visited the showroom to see the full range.

The industry has changed dramatically since then.

Why Do More Homeowners Choose a Home Blind Consultation?

Today, most of our customers choose a home visit.

The reason is simple.

The room itself tells us things a showroom never can.

At Barlow Blinds, we bring our entire range with us, including roller blinds, vertical blinds, wood and faux wood blinds, cellular blinds, Venetians, Romans and day and night blinds.

6 Roller Blind sample books, 4 Vertical books, 7 Wood and Fauxwood swatches, 3 Cellular ranges, 4 Aluminium swatches and 2 Day and Night sample books in each of our vans.

The only exception are our shutters where we actually have a mobile shutter showroom, so you can, see and operate full size shutters on your driveway.

More importantly, we see the room where the blind will actually live.

And that changes everything.

A white fabric that looks perfect under showroom lights can look completely different in a bright south-facing kitchen.

A grey blind that feels dark in a display area can appear surprisingly light in natural daylight.

The room provides context.

And context leads to better decisions.

The Problems Most People Never See Coming

One of the biggest benefits of a home consultation isn't choosing fabrics.

It's identifying problems before they happen.

For example:

  • Will the blind stop the door opening fully?
  • Is there enough recess depth?
  • Will the blind catch on window handles?
  • Could condensation affect fabric performance?
  • Is the blind too heavy for the person using it?
  • Is there actually a better product for the room?

We've seen customers spend thirty minutes choosing a fabric colour and less than thirty seconds thinking about how the blind will operate.

Yet it's usually the operation they'll live with every single day.

That's why these details matter.

The Best Blind Isn't Always the Blind You Asked For

This is perhaps the biggest difference between buying online and working with an experienced blind advisor.

Most online retailers will sell you the blind you've selected.

A good advisor helps you decide whether it's actually the right blind in the first place.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it isn't.

And sometimes there's a completely different solution that works better once we understand how the room is used.

We've had customers request vertical blinds and ultimately choose shutters.

Others ask for roller blinds and end up selecting cellular blinds because they solve a problem they didn't even realise they had.

That's not because their original choice was wrong.

It's because the best solution often becomes obvious once someone sees the room.

So Which Buying Route Is Best?

If you're confident measuring and installing blinds yourself and your windows are straightforward, buying online can be a very cost-effective solution.

If you enjoy seeing products in person and want to get a feel for the company you're buying from, a showroom remains an excellent option.

But if you'd like expert advice, precise measurements, professional installation and the confidence that potential problems have been identified before anything is ordered, a home consultation offers advantages that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Because choosing blinds isn't really about colours or fabrics.

It's about making sure the blind works properly in the home where you'll use it every day.

And that's something no website can fully see from a measuring guide.

FAQs

Is it cheaper to buy blinds online?
Usually, yes. However, if measurements are incorrect or the wrong product is chosen, the overall cost can end up being higher.

Can blind companies spot problems before ordering?
Yes. A home survey often identifies issues such as restricted door openings, shallow recesses, condensation risks and unsuitable product choices.

Do colours look different in my home compared to a showroom?
Often they do. Natural light, wall colours and room orientation can all affect how a fabric appears.

Why do blind companies offer home visits?
To measure accurately, assess the room, identify potential issues and help customers choose the most suitable product.

Should I visit a showroom or arrange a home visit?
Both have advantages. Many customers now prefer home visits because they can see fabrics and colours in the room where the blinds will actually be installed.
