Are window shutters expensive?

Are window shutters expensive? is a difficult question to answer because it really depends on who you are talking to, what maybe expensive to you may not be to someone else.

When compared to most other window blinds then yes at first glance window shutters are expensive, but you need to look a little closer than the price.

For us as a business window shutters are completely different to any other blinds we sell, they are more like a piece of furniture than a window covering.

To give you an idea of what I mean, when we install a house full of roller blinds then I would expect to see that customer again in maybe 5 or 6 years for some new blinds or changing the fabrics.

When we install a home full of window shutters I would not expect to see the customer again because once you have window shutters install then you don’t change them…ever.

So when it comes down to ‘are window shutters expensive?’ yes they are upfront but over the lifespan of a window shutter compared to a more traditional window blind then there probably isn’t a great deal in it.

To give you a rough idea on the cost difference you can expect to pay 3 or 4 times as much for your window shutter as you would for maybe the same size wooden venetian blind.

There are really 2 reasons for the price difference, there is a lot more work involved in making a window shutter than making say a wooden venetian blind and the attention to detail is far greater on a window shutter. A few millimetres out on a shutter and it doesn’t sit in the frame right or doesn’t fold correctly, whereas a few millimetres on a venetian would not get noticed.

The second reason is the installation time, you would be looking at probably 4 times as long to install a shutter compared to a traditional blind.

My advice for anyone looking at investing in window shutters would always be to think about how you will be staying in your home, if you plan to be there for 10-20 years then window shutters would be worth considering. If it is more short term then you are not going to get the real value from your investment in your shutters.

I hope this helps in answering your question ‘are window shutters expensive?’, I would always recommend visiting your local blind / shutter showroom to get the best advice to help you get the right blinds or shutters for your home.
