How to Clean Wooden Venetian Blinds

Wooden Venetian blinds are a great option for your window dressing. They offer light control and privacy as well as giving a cosy and warm atmosphere in your home. But, have you ever wondered how to keep your wooden Venetian blinds looking good with regular cleaning and maintenance?

Most of us remember to clean our windows regularly but often forget or maybe avoid shall we say, to clean the window blinds. To be honest, most people feel cleaning blinds is a boring chore and a tedious task to do, especially wooden Venetian blinds that have been treated with special varnishes as they require more attention while cleaning. The best advice here is to make it a regular weekly cleaning task to keep dust from building up on the Venetian blinds over time, which will save you time and energy in the long run.

Methods to Clean Blinds

Now, let’s have a look at some cleaning methods that we can use to keep the Venetian blinds clean and looking great all year round.

Clean with A Duster

This is a quick cleaning method to clean the wooden Venetian blinds if you are in a rush. Simply close the slats facing down and clean with a feather duster in a downward motion to clear the dust. When finished cleaning, open and close the slats in an opposite direction and clean again with the feather duster. Dust with care to avoid disturbing the slab position.

Clean with A Special Blind Brush

For a more thorough clean, try using a soft dry cloth or a specially made blind cleaning tool such as the Lakeland microfibre Venetian blind brush. Open the wooden Venetian blinds and run the blind brush across the slats, starting in the middle and working outwards. After finishing one direction, close the blind and open in the other direction to clean the underside of the slats.

Clean with A Vacuum Cleaner

Using the soft brush attachment from the vacuum cleaner, clean the wooden Venetian blinds with the low suction feature. Bear in mind that a vacuum cleaner with high power suction could damage your wooden Venetian blinds so be careful. So, open the Venetian blinds, clean one slat in one hand with the soft brush and slowly run it over with care. Repeat on each slat in the same way as the duster method above until you have finished all of the slats. Use a sturdy step ladder to reach the top area to avoid pulling the Venetian blinds. You can also take them down and lay them on a cloth or towel to protect the Venetian blinds and your flooring.

How to Clean the Stains on Your Venetian Blinds

If you can’t remove any stubborn stains with a dry soft cloth or your special Venetian blinds brush, try rubbing lightly with a slightly damp cloth until the stain is clear. Avoid rubbing too hard on the stain as this could damage the varnish finish on your Venetian blinds. Once the stain has been removed, dry the slats with a clean dry cloth to remove the moisture.
